In July 1951 Hibernian played in the St. Mungo Cup. This competition, in the format of a knock-out cup, was organised by Glasgow Corporation to celebrate the 1951 Festival of Britain.
First round ties were played either home or away but second and third round ties were played at neutral venues. Thus Hibs played both Motherwell and Aberdeen at Celtic’s Parkhead. The trophy was eventually won by Celtic who defeated Aberdeen in the final at Hampden.
Hibernian recorded the following scores:
14 July Third Lanark (H) W 3-1 Turnbull, Johnstone 2
21 July Motherwell (N) W 3-1 Turnbull (p), Souness, Johnstone
25 July Aberdeen (N) D 1-1 Smith
28 July Aberdeen (A) L 1-2 Turnbull (p)
