A powerful German born defender who could also occupy the holding midfield role. Mathias joined Hibernian in July 1999 and provided much needed muscle to a side that was increasingly earning respect for its flair. He was a rather combative player whose name found its way into referee’s books with an alarming frequency. He was vastly experienced having played in Germany with Stahl Brandenburg, Rot Weiss Essen, Bochum and Fortuna Dussledorf.

He was out of contract at Easter Road in the summer of 2002  and spent a brief time lookin for a club before Bobby Williamson offered him a year contract. He however played very few games in the 2002/03 season.

Signed in May 1991 from Salveson BC. He scored early in his career against Hearts at Tynecastle an this along with his distinctive red hair ensured he stood out. He was never quite able to grab an automatic spot and eventually moved to Stirling Albion. Scored the winner for Albion in the 1998/99 season when they knocked Hibs out of the Scottish Cup after a replay.

One of the more extrovert players in recent football, Jackson had a natural ability that encompassed not just playing but upsetting referees and opposition supporters. Yet when he concentrated on the game he was a wonderfully talented player capable of moments of sublime ability.
A proven goalscorer he served Meadowbank Thistle, Newcastle United and Dundee United where he rarely failed to excite. He played for Dundee United in the epic 1991 Scottish Cup final against Motherwell (which United lost 3-4 despite a Jackson goal).
Darren joined Hibernian in the summer of 1992 and scored 13 goals in his first league season as a Hibee. Indeed he remained a frequent marksman for Hibs over the next five seasons and must have caused consternation when he scored the winner for Hibs in the 1993 League Cup semi-final against his former Dundee United employees. He scored 50 goals in 172 league matches and was rarely missing from first team action due to his super fitness.  He moved to Celtic in the close season of 1997 but lasted barely a couple of season before returning to Edinburgh with Hearts. This of course made his subsequent visits to Easter Road rather ‘tasty’ but he remained unphazed and maintained his impudence when returning with his next club – Livingston.

signed by Bobby Williamson on loan from Sunderland in 2002. Craig was a left wing back and spent the bulk of the 2002/03 season at Easter Road. He performed well and scored a few goals including one in the incredible 4-4 draw at Tynecastle. Hibs could not offer him a full time contract and he returned to Sunderland for the following season.

A tall and powerful youngster Willie broke into the Hibs side in the early 1980s and provided a glut of goals. The fact that he was comfortable at either centre-half or centre-forward enhanced his prospects no end.
He won a First Division championship badge at Easter Road in 1981 but was rather surprisingly allowed to leave on a free transfer some four years later. His Easter Road career had run from 1980 to 1985 and brought 27 goals from 117 league matches.
John Lambie signed him for Hamilton and what an astute move that proved; Willie helping Accies to two First Division titles. He joined Dundee in 1990 and won a Centenary Cup medal at Fir Park in 1990 before adding another First Division badge two years later.
His career thereafter carried him to Partick Thistle, Hearts and Ayr United. He was with the Honest Men when they landed the 1997 Second Division Championship and in the summer of 1998 joined Partick Thistle as assistant manager.

Signed in the 1999/2000 season, Earl made just five outings as a substitute and failed to make the impression hoped for.
He was born in St. Lucia in 1971 and joined Hibs with a solid reputation having picked up 68 international caps and served clubs in Portugal (Olieveirense, Lecca and Selgoireas) and England (Ipswich, Rotherham and Plymouth). A trial period when Hibs were in the Caribbean in the winter shut-down convinced Alex McLeish that the man from the bizarrely named Joe Public could prove useful.
Sadly he never really adapted to the rigours of the Scottish game and was released in the summer of 2000.

Joined Hibs in February 1947 from Clyde and made a fairly spectacular start, netting 4 goals in the 7-1 demolition of Airdrie. However, he could not gain a permanent berth in the side which led to him leaving with the remarkable statistics of played 4 games scored 5 goals!
He moved back to Clyde in October 1947 having cost Hibs £10,000 to lure eastwards. That £10,000 fee was, at the time, a Scottish record fee being the first five figure deal.

Born in Selkirk in 1929, “Nicker” Johnstone was a member of the Famous Five Forward line. He was a most successful player, relying on ‘twinkle toes’ and eye for goal for his popularity.
Signed from Selkirk in 1946, he ultimately had two spells with Hibernian. The first took him from 1946 to March 1955 when he joined Manchester City. He returned to Hibs in September 1959 but was back on his travels to Lancashire in October 1960 when he put pen to paper for Oldham Athletic.
His career was laced with memorable moments. He played for Great Britain against the Rest of Europe at Wembley, won 6 Scottish League caps, was twice a league championship winner (1951 and 1952) then played in two FA Cup finals with Manchester City. A versatile player it is probably fair to say that he could play in either of the inside forward berths.

His father Jimmy Kane was on Hibs books briefly before moving to Cowdenbeath in November 1959 without ever having played a league match.
Paul joined Hibs in 1982 and as a life long fan brought up in Leith was delighted to do so. Kane spent nine seasons at Easer Road before moving on to Oldham then Aberdeen before he left to join Viking Stavanger of Norway in Scotland’s first ever Bosman transfer, just before John Collins, another ex Hibee, followed a similar path from Celtic to Monaco.

Signed in 1938 from Kirkintilloch Rob Roy by manager Willie McCartney. He quickly became the regular Hibs left half but like most players of that era saw his career badly disrupted by the war.
In 1941 he helped Hibernian defeat Rangers in the final of the Scottish Summer Cup and in 1947 was on duty as Hibs went down to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final (despite the gift of a first minute goal!).
Capped against England in a war-time international in 1943, he added a Scotitsh League cap in 1947.
He was a championship winner with Hibs too and it was only natural after such a lengthy career as a Hibee that he should graduate to the coaching staff. He made a successful move in electing in 1959 to join Bob Shankly at Dundee as they won the league in 1961. Later he would manage Falkirk and then coach at Partick Thistle.

Initially on Meadowbank Thistle’s staff, Rab reverted to non-league football with Whitehill Welfare before Hibernian signed him in 1978. He made his debut against Rangers at right back just weeks later and impressed all with his composure. However, he rarely scaled those heights again was destined to be a fringe player at Easter Road.
His short career at Hibs ended when he was granted a free-transfer and he moved on to St. Johnstone. He then managed to get sent off during his pre-season debut!

Broke into the Hibs side in the 1960/61 season and returned the most impressive figures of 10 goals in only 11 league matches. Considering that he also scored against Barcelona and Roma in our Fairs Cup adventures it was quite a season for Bobby.
The following season he had only 6 league starts and it was clear that he was not going to be the answer to the post-Joe Baker era. He went to Greenock Morton in September 1962. From Scotland it was to Canada where he played with Toronto City and Hamilton Steelers before the lure of Scotland called and he joined Raith Rovers. He was a reliable centre-back for Rovers in the same side as Ian Porterfield who would later make a name for himself with Sunderland at Wembley in 1973.

But for a brief stint at Easter Road Billy Kirkwood would surely have been a one-club man and that club would have been Dundee United. He joined the Tannadice outfit in 1976 and proved himself a versatile performer rattling in 67 goals in almost 400 outings despite many of them being as a defender.
He won a Premier Division Championship badge in 1983 with United as well as two League Cup winners medals. He moved to Hibernian in 1986 and made his debut in the ‘Souness match’. Impressively strong and economical he was soon appointed club captain but he his stay was short and he returned to Dundee United.
He later coached in the game and managed Hull City and Dundee United.
